Three South Africans and two Afghan nationals were killed in an attack on the Partnership in Academics & Development (PAD) compound in Kabul on Saturday 29 November. Werner Groenewald was killed along with his 17-year-old son, 15-year-old daughter and two Afghan co-workers.
Three Taliban gunmen entered the compound dressed as policemen and carried out an attack that lasted for three hours. Werner’s wife, Hannelie, was at a clinic where she worked as a doctor when the attack occurred. Werner, who had worked in Afghanistan for 12 years, was killed trying to protect his children.
The Taliban later claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter, stating that the compound was a “Christian proselytising compound.” PAD is a US-based educational organisation. A friend of Werner said that he had closed his last session with an international group of co-workers by saying, “We only die once, so it might as well be for Jesus.”

- Pray for Hannelie and the families of the two Afghan workers; may the Lord uphold them as they come to terms with their great loss.
- Pray that as they grieve the Lord will give them the willingness and ability to exemplify the love of God through love and prayer for those who persecute (Matthew 5:43-48).
- Pray the loss of these believers will not be in vain, that the testimonies of them and their loved ones may be used by the Lord to draw Afghans to Christ.
