Mohammed Hegazy, a high-profile convert from Islam who is now known by his Christian name, Bishoy Armia Bolous, was arrested outside a café in Menia, Upper Egypt, on 4 December for “inciting sectarian strife.”
Bishoy, 31, was reportedly working for a Christian satellite TV station and reporting on clashes between Muslims and Christians when he was arrested.
A convert from Islam, Bishoy made headlines as the first Egyptian to legally pursue changing his religious status on his ID card. Officials refused to allow the change on the grounds that it is illegal under Sharia law to leave Islam. Bishoy received death threats and was forced into hiding as a result of his legal case. He previously had been arrested and tortured for his conversion, and some are concerned that this recent arrest will also result in torture.
