Three Christian teachers from Kamuthe Primary School in Garissa, were killed by the Somali-based terror group al-Shabaab in the early hours of 13 January. The armed militants ambushed Kamuthe village around 2am, targeting the school’s resource centre which hosted the teachers.
Prior to the ambush, the attackers destroyed a telecommunication tool in an effort to paralyse communication as they carried out their heinous attack.
Mr Robert Kibutu, a teacher who resides outside of the school’s residential area, confirmed the attack, saying, “My fellow teachers were fatally shot by an unknown number of suspected al-Shabaab militia who stormed Kamuthe Primary School early this morning and leaving one severely injured by two gunshots. We are sad and at the same time scared because we are targeted for being non-local government workers that belong to the Christian faith.”
Those killed were Caleb Mutua, Titus Ushindi, and Samuel Muthui Kyonzu. Joshua Mutua survived with serious leg injuries.
The attack comes against the backdrop of a series of attacks from the terrorist group in the last five weeks, leading to the loss of 25 people total in Wajir, Lamu, Mandera, and Garissa. On 6 December, four teachers were among the 11 non-local Christian passengers killed en route to Mandera from Nairobi when al-Shabaab flagged down the bus they were travelling in. The militants separated the passengers and killed those on the spot who failed to recite the Islamic Shahada.

Oh Father, we know we need to forgive those people, and we need to pray for those militants, but oh Father my heart is breaking for the families of those killed, for the pain they are enduring!!! I am angry at the world watching and not doing anything!!!! Father, please forgive me. I know that those that was killed, was immediately in Your presence. I know there are people praying and there are those like Open Doors that have been there and still working behind the scenes to care and help our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. My Father, open the eyes of those still blinded by the enemy, open the eyes of the Christians to see the pain and the wounds of their brothers and sisters and to pray and stand in the gap for them. My Father, sometimes I want to look away as it is too painful to hear of the suffering of our brothers and sisters. Oh Father, I feel so unworthy when I hear of the perseverance and the courage of those suffering for you. Thank You for strengthening Your children. I pray for endless miracles and that You will literally open prison doors and blind the murderers as You did with Paul!! Let Your name be glorified and many come to Christ. In the name of Jesus I ask it alone!
David cries, ’Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. Take up shield and armour; arise and come to my aid. Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, “I am your salvation.”’ Almighty God, when we read of the continual slaughter of your people, together with grieving believers around the world, we cry out with David the words above….
‘but now is the time of salvation,’ (2 Corinthians 6:1) not of judgement, ‘for God sent His Son into the world not to condemn the world but to save the world through Him.’ (John 3:17) Father we ask for your Spirit to bring about the miracle of conversion in the hearts of these marauders and murderers bringing them out of darkened into the kingdom of the light of your glorious Son. Preserve your people and give them profound comfort and help in this time of trial that they might continue to be useful and fruitful in your name.
