PAKISTAN: Asia Bibi Remains in Prison, in Good Spirits

Asia Bibi, a Christian mother, was convicted of blasphemy after a co-worker accused Bibi of insulting the prophet Mohammed. While she maintains her innocence, an accusation of blasphemy is enough to warrant the death penalty in Pakistan.

Asia’s conviction has brought international attention to the country’s blasphemy laws. Christians have called for Asia’s release and for a repeal of the laws, while extremists in Pakistan continue to demand that she be executed.

She’s alone in the prison, and a female prison guard is with her at all times, both to keep watch over her and to provide security for her. Her lawyer reports that he is working with the court registrar to fix a new hearing date for her.

Voice of the Martyrs staff spoke with Asia Bibi’s lawyer last week, and he reported that she is healthy and in good spirits in the Multan jail.

  • Praise God for upholding Asia. May she continue to find strength in Him.
  • Pray for her family and legal representatives; may they be shielded from those who wish to do them harm.
  • Ask the Lord to make the way possible for Asia’s release. Pray for the upcoming hearing.

I have written a letter to the High Commissioner of the High Commission of Pakistan in Canberra asking he look into and voice his concern and objection to this sentence.
    What else can I do?
