Project: Pakistan Eye Screenings and Operations

Throughout March and April, Voice of the Martyrs Australia, with the help of our supporters, funded over 1100 eye screenings and 167 lifechanging vision operations in Pakistan. These were coordinated by Dr Reginald Zahiruddin.

Prior to the operations, eye screenings were advertised throughout churches and Christian colonies and over 1100 screenings took place in several locations throughout Pakistan.

Some patients had refractive errors or infections and doctors provided vitamins, eye drops and over 120 prescription glasses. Others were booked in for a follow up screening.

One hundred and thirty people had vision restoring cataract surgery, meaning their sight was completely restored. The other 37 people were treated for prolonged discomfort or infections which could lead to blindness if not corrected.

Almost all the patients were Christians, living in basties (semi-slums) below the poverty line, who would have otherwise been forced to endure their eye problems due to lack of finances.
