Two men abducted a Sri Lankan pastor on 24 May and threatened to kill him if he didn’t beg forgiveness for his Christian activities. They eventually took the pastor to a remote location, where they beat him and threatened to destroy his church. The pastor filed a police report, but the men have not been caught.

In 2009 the country passed an anti-conversion law, making conversion from Buddhism to Christianity illegal.

The persecution of Christians has escalated in recent years with the rise of militant Buddhist nationalist groups in Sri Lanka. More than 250 churches have been destroyed or damaged in sectarian violence.

  • Pray the Lord will completely heal this pastor in body and mind. Ask God to give him continued boldness in his desire to serve Him.
  • Pray for the perpetrators, that God would bring them to justice in this life and to repentance for the next.
  • Pray the church in Sri Lanka will be a strong witness to God’s grace, mercy and forgiveness for those reconciled to Him.
