LAOS: Pray for ‘Dee’ Living in Safe House

LAOS: Pray for ‘Dee’ Living in Safe House

A teenage girl from Laos went home while on holiday from her high school to share her new Christian faith with her family, but was immediately rejected and disowned for becoming a believer.

‘Dee,’ 16, had once heard many negative things about the Christian faith, but after becoming a believer, she thought it would be okay to tell her parents about what she had learned. Her parents were not happy and tried to force Dee to renounce her faith. When she refused, insisting that she will follow Jesus no matter what happens to her, her parents kicked her out of the home and told her that she is no longer their daughter.

Church leaders are helping Dee, who is staying in a safe house, and they ask for prayers for her and say that although she is sad about her parents, she still has a lot of joy and peace. Dee also asks for prayers for her parents and wants them to know Christ.

  • Thank the Lord for strengthening her through a difficult trial so soon in her Christian walk. Thank the Lord for the provision of a home.

CHINA: More Crosses Forcibly Removed in Zhejiang

CHINA: More Crosses Forcibly Removed in Zhejiang

Forty-nine crosses have been removed in Zhejiang province since the beginning of 2016 as the Chinese government continues to attempt to eliminate the power of Christianity.

Churches which have fought against the removals have had their water and electricity cut off, forcing them to have services elsewhere as the buildings are deemed unusable.

Christians stand in defiance in front of buildings, attempting to stop the advance of demolition crews. Government notices and orders are plastered on the doors of churches with church leaders being taken into custody, some never to be heard from.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that Christians in Zhejiang would be encouraged in knowing that the government can remove the cross but they cannot destroy the body of Christ.
  • Pray for believers in China as the country continues to experience huge rates of growth and revival.
  • Pray the bold witness of these Christians will have an effect on the hearts and minds of the authorities responsible for targeting the church.

CHINA: Lawyer Criminally Detained as Father Goes Missing

CHINA: Lawyer Criminally Detained as Father Goes Missing

Please pray for our brother in Christ in China, human rights lawyer Zhang Kai, who was placed under ‘criminal detention’ on 26 February.

On the same day, Zhang’s father was summoned to the offices of the Wenzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau – and has not been seen since. Until 26 February, Zhang was being held in an unregistered or illegal ‘black jail,’ his home for the past six months.

Zhang Kai is being held because of his involvement with Zhejiang churches which the authorities have targeted for demolition or cross removal for more than two years. He was arrested in August in Wenzhou city, where he was helping churches mount a legal challenge.

Zhang was originally charged with “endangering national security” and “gathering crowds to disturb the social order.” There has since been concern that these could be replaced with the more serious charge of ‘spying.’

Prayer Points

  • Please pray for the immediate release of Zhang Kai and his father.
  • Pray that the Chinese authorities will end their persecution of churches in Zhejiang and of lawyers defending religious rights.
  • Pray that churches in Zhejiang will find a fresh unity as congregations of all denominations are targeted for attack.

VOM’s partner office in the UK has launched a petition calling on the Chinese Government to release Zhang immediately. Please sign the online petition and forward to your contacts to sign also.

PHILIPPINES: Christians in Danger

PHILIPPINES: Christians in Danger

The rise of Islamic radicalism throughout the globe has placed religious minorities in dire situations as they have become the prime target for many. Most would view the Middle East and Africa to be the primary location for Islamic radicals attacking Christians, however, Southeast Asia is seeing its own fight against radicalism.

The Philippines, which has been primarily a Christian majority nation, has seen a rise in attacks against Christians from Muslim radicals.

Over the Christmas holiday 14 people were murdered by Islamic terrorism as a chapel was hit with explosives, and 200 Islamist gunman raided villages in Mindanao, leaving a further nine dead.

The rise of Islamic radicalism has placed religious minorities on high alert.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for the friends and family of the victims of the raid in villages in Mindanao; may they not seek retaliation, but instead be willing to forgive and intercede for the militants who perpetrated these heartless attacks.
  • Pray that as Islamic radicalism grows in Southeast Asia there will be a mighty breakthrough of God’s power in the Philippines.
  • Pray for righteousness and justice to prevail in all levels of governance.
