INDIA: Hindu Militants Install Idol Inside Church

INDIA: Hindu Militants Install Idol Inside Church

Last week, a statue of a monkey-headed Hindu god was installed inside a Protestant AOG church that was undergoing renovations, in Haryana, northern India. The Hindu activists responsible then manhandled the church pastor and vandalised the building.

The group claims that a Hindu temple once existed there, though they have failed to produce any documents to substantiate the claim. The church holds documents of ownership to the land.

The Hindus continued to offer daily prayers before the monkey-headed Hindu god, according to church officials. After several days, the statue was removed by police. Tensions remain high.

Pastor Uday Pillai, the associate pastor of the church said violence against Christians is normal in Haryana and most cases go unreported. Only 0.2% of its people are Christian.

As part of its services, the church offers schooling to 210 slum children. Hindu groups claim Christian services such as education and health care among the poor, are a façade to attract them toward Christianity.

  • Pray the believers in Haryana will be unified in their love for one another and their witness to the community.

CHINA: Authorities Attack Christian Property

CHINA: Authorities Attack Christian Property

Authorities in China’s Fujian province destroyed more than a dozen Christian homes on 11 June.

At around 9am, more than 100 officials from various government departments arrived at the homes of Xingguang Church members. They moved furniture from the homes into the hallway. They yelled, “What are you recording!” at a person filming the incident and took the person’s phone away.

The authorities then proceeded to destroy property. In all, more than 12 homes were ruined, all had served as worship places for the church.

Wang Xiaofei, the wife of Xingguang Church’s pastor, asked for prayer from her friends on the social media platform WeChat.

This is the second wave of persecution against Christians from Xingguang Church since the outbreak of the coronavirus. On 3 May, more than 100 law enforcement personnel raided a worship service held by Xingguang Church and beat Christians and onlookers, injuring some. They also seized some Christians.

INDIA: Pastor Brutally Beaten by Hindu Radicals

INDIA: Pastor Brutally Beaten by Hindu Radicals

On Thursday 28 May, Pastor Dinesh Kumar was brutally beaten by radical Hindu nationalists in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Pastor Kumar was returning from a prayer meeting when he was attacked and remains unconscious in the hospital.

According to local sources, several unidentified individuals followed Pastor Kumar on motorcycle as he was returning home from the prayer meeting. They brutally attacked him with sticks and hit him on the head. These blows rendered Pastor Kumar unconscious.

The mob continued to attack until a local noticed the situation. The mob fled the scene and the local person then helped Pastor Kumar to his house.

“I was screaming out loud when I saw my husband,” Mamta, Pastor Kumar’s wife said. “My mind went blank and I had no words. I thought something fatal took place looking at him with no movement.”

“I remembered he used to tell me, ‘I am in the ministry and committed to taking the Gospel to the people. I know the cost and some time it may be my life,’” Mamta explained.

Pastor Kumar was taken to the hospital where he received 16 stitches and remains unconscious. This was to contain the bleeding on his head and several other injuries. Pastor Kumar and his family serve as church planters in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, several incidents of persecution have been reported from this area.

The police are waiting for Pastor Kumar to regain consciousness to proceed with taking a statement and then an investigation into the attack. The assailants ran from the scene before they could be identified.

UGANDA: Christian Woman Seriously Beaten

UGANDA: Christian Woman Seriously Beaten

A young Christian woman from the village of Luwooko in eastern Uganda was ambushed and beaten last month for sharing her faith.

Lydia Nabirye, 23, is the daughter of an area evangelist. In early March, she shared her faith with a young Muslim woman who later came to salvation in Christ. After the new convert was threatened by family members, Lydia’s family gave her refuge, along with six other converts from Islam.

On 7 April, Lydia travelled to another village to visit a bereaved mother. As she returned, she was attacked by a mob, three of whom she could identify. The group said they intended to kill her because she was converting Muslims to Christianity. When nearby witnesses heard her cries, police were called and the assailants fled.

Lydia, her father Paul, and the rest of the family remain vigilant, knowing that Muslim villagers have sworn to harm them. This ministering family has particularly requested prayer for Muslim background believers in the area.

  • Praise God for the ongoing ministry of Lydia and her family in reaching out with the message of His salvation.
  • Pray for the protection of this ministering family and other Christians in Uganda who are sharing their faith.
  • Ask the Lord to encourage all believers, especially those who face anger from their families for turning to Christ.

SOMALIA: Scholars Urge Followers to Defend Islam

SOMALIA: Scholars Urge Followers to Defend Islam

Realising that a growing number of Somalis are leaving Islam and embracing Christianity, Somali Islamic leaders are issuing warnings and urging their followers to defend Islam.

A prominent Somali sheikh in Nairobi, Kenya, used his Friday address to warn that Somalia is not 100% Muslim anymore and that many young Somalis are leaving Islam. He urged his listeners to do something about those who leave Islam or share Christianity on social media.

Another sheikh, exhorting his listeners to be on guard, cited a statistic that 24% of young Somalis leave Islam every year.

Somali Christians and those who minister to Somalis report a corresponding rise in threats and attacks against them, including one murder.
