BANGLADESH: Rohingya Christians Attacked

BANGLADESH: Rohingya Christians Attacked

A pastor and his daughter were among those abducted during a large-scale attack targeting Rohingya Christians in a refugee camp. According to local partners, kidnappers forced the girl to marry an older Muslim man. Several other families reported kidnappings as well.

The attack, which occurred in the Kutapalong, the world’s largest refugee camp, left 12 Christians wounded. The Christians were refugees from Myanmar who came to Bangladesh in 2007.

These families were actively involved in ministry within the camp and have faced significant opposition due to their Christian faith and testimony.

A similar attack happened in May 2019 by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army who claim to be fighting for the liberation of the Rohingya. Local police insist that the ARSA is not involved and have downplayed the number of injured.

Since the attack, as many as 170 Christians have been moved to a segregated ‘transit camp’ for their protection. Some of the kidnapped believers are still missing. There are reports stating that one man has been promised release if he converts to Islam. The son of another kidnapped man has asked fellow Christians to please pray that the victims remain brave.

  • Ask the Lord to provide safety for all concerned, while granting them courage in the face of violent opposition.
  • Remember each of the abducted victims, including the girl has been forced into marriage. May they be rescued from captivity and any further victimisation.
  • Ask God to soften the hearts of the perpetrators, so they will come to sincere repentance and salvation in Christ.

BANGLADESH: Christian Convert Released from Prison

BANGLADESH: Christian Convert Released from Prison

A Christian convert from Islam who had been imprisoned for more than two years was released on bail recently.

Sisir Islam became a believer in 2012 and immediately began sharing Jesus with others in his community, leading 17 friends to Christ.

On 23 September 2014, after returning home from a VOM-supported training centre, Sisir was charged with the murder of a local business man. He later learned that Muslim leaders in his village had accused him of the murder as retribution for his conversion to Christianity.

The prison guards and prisoners treated Sisir poorly while he was imprisoned, and he was frequently ill. Finally, in July 2018, he was released on bail and returned home to recover.

  • Thank God for Sisir’s release and his faithful witness while in prison.
  • Pray Sisir may receive physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual healing.
  • Pray for wisdom as Sisir considers future ministry work. Pray the 17 people he previously led to Christ, may grow in faith.

BANGLADESH: Former Muslims Forced Back to Islam

BANGLADESH: Former Muslims Forced Back to Islam

Thirty families turned back to Islam after facing intense community pressure, said local church planter Sujen, who became a believer through a Bible correspondence course several years ago.

After becoming convinced Jesus was the Way, the Truth and the Life, he began gradually sharing with others in his community. Though his parents rejected him, Sujen went on to lead all his brothers and their spouses to Christ. Over time, he baptised almost 100 families in four villages.

“In the beginning I never faced any problems,” he said. Last year, however, a wealthy Muslim patron hired a thug to go around intimidating the new Christians. Several lost jobs. Those who had small businesses found no one would buy from them.

Eventually, a group of 30 families were taken to the mosque and asked to reconvert to Islam, and they gave in.

  • Pray for the families who have turned back to Islam. May they hasten to return to the Lord and be renewed in their strength.
  • Pray they will find encouragement from the love and support of Sujen and other believers.
  • Pray the Holy Spirit may be at work in the community and that the witness of Sujen and other believers may powerfully move those who currently oppose the Gospel.

BANGLADESH: Christian Brothers Beaten and Threatened

BANGLADESH: Christian Brothers Beaten and Threatened

A Hindu man named Bhargav heard the Gospel and came to faith in Christ. A week later, he shared his faith with a Muslim friend, who didn’t respond to the Gospel but told his Hindu neighbour about Bhargav’s conversion. The Hindu neighbour then spread the news that Bhargav had become a Christian and was sharing his faith with others in the village.

A week later, a group of Muslim and Hindu teens beat Bhargav; his brother, Paynam, who had also accepted Christ, was later beaten by some Muslims.

Both Bhargav and Paynam have received death threats since the attacks, and they are now staying at a safe house with their families.

  • Pray that Bhargav and Paynam will heal from their injuries and that their faith will be emboldened by this persecution.
  • Thank the Lord for the provision of the safe house. Pray for their families’ protection.
  • Ask the Lord to use the witness of Bhargav and Paynam as a testimony to the Gospel and pray that those who are persecuting them will come to know Jesus.

BANGLADESH: Pray for Imam Fedu, a New Christian Convert

BANGLADESH: Pray for Imam Fedu, a New Christian Convert

Imam Fedu, a Muslim scholar and teacher in Bangladesh, recently placed his faith in Christ after receiving a Christian tract and hearing the Gospel from a Christian worker.

“Jesus is the Saviour,” Fedu said. He immediately resigned from his Muslim work and made plans to be baptised.

“In Scripture, Nicodemus was a big Jewish scholar, but he didn’t know how to be born again,” the Christian worker said. “It is the same with my friend. When I came back home, Fedu called and [said] he had already led another imam to Christ, and that he gave him a New Testament.”

Fedu hopes the other imams who served with him at the mosque will all come to know the truth of Jesus.

  • Praise God for drawing Fedu to Himself. Pray that he will grow in faith and that God will use him to reach other imams, who will then share the Gospel with many more Muslims.
  • Pray also for the bold Christian worker who is sharing the love of Christ with Muslim scholars.
  • Pray the Lord will pour out His Spirit on this nation. May the church be a faithful and strong witness to Him.
