MYANMAR: Five Families Kicked Out of Village in Rakhine State

MYANMAR: Five Families Kicked Out of Village in Rakhine State

After being shackled for three days and fined for buying a banana from a Christian vendor, Maung Cia sought out a pastor in a neighbouring village. The pastor shared the Gospel with Maung and two of his friends, and they accepted Christ.

Maung then led 10 other villagers to Jesus and invited the pastor to lead a worship service in his village. Midway through the service, Buddhist villagers severely beat the pastor and stoned the worshippers. Village leaders later forced five families out of the village.

VOM is providing the families with food and housing assistance. “Now as much as I can I’m sharing the Good News and I will continue to do so,” Maung said. “Please remember us in your prayers. Thank you for your support and your love. God bless you.”

  • Praise God for taking the barbaric and unjust punishment inflicted on Maung, to bring about a spiritual awakening.
  • Pray for those who oppose the Lord and His Good News in the area, that He will use the witness of these new believers to encourage others to repentance and salvation.
  • Pray the families affected may be strengthened in their faith and be mightily encouraged as they see the hand of God at work.

UGANDA: Christian Convert Killed

UGANDA: Christian Convert Killed

Yusuf Kintu, a 41-year-old former Imam of Macca Mosque in Dolwe Island, Mayuge District was killed on 7 December by a Muslim mob. Yusuf had converted to Christianity a week before he was attacked.

According to Pastor Andrew Nyanma of the Full Gospel Church Dolwe, Yusuf had put his faith in Christ on 30 November after hearing the Gospel message.

“We had been talking on several occasions but he was so argumentative when we touched on matters related to faith. He was a brilliant Muslim Imam but also respected other people’s faith. On this day, he was calm and receptive. He gave me humble time to explain to him why Christ is the only way to the Father. He repented of his sins and committed to following Christ.” Pastor Andrew said.

Three days after Yusuf was saved, his wife Hashfa divorced him. She left with two of their young children to her father’s home in Bugiri District, leaving behind the two older children, Abudkriim 19, and Sauda 16.

According to several witnesses, the local Muslim community was upset with Yusuf for leaving Islam and becoming a Christian. Yusuf was severely beaten and was left unconscious. Pastor Andrew took him to the hospital, where he later died.

Islam’s influence has increased in the majority Christian nation in the past few years. Many Christians within the majority Muslim border regions are facing severe persecution, especially those who convert from Islam.

  • Ask the Lord to bring good from this tragedy. That Yusuf’s witness for the Gospel will live on and bear fruit.
  • Pray for the protection of Pastor Andrew and ask God to bless his ministry.
  • Pray for Yusuf’s family, that the Lord will minister to them as they come to terms with their loss.

INDIA: Christian Pastor Beaten and Left to Die

INDIA: Christian Pastor Beaten and Left to Die

A Christian pastor was beaten unconscious and left locked in a room to die by radical Hindu nationalists in India’s Bihar state.

On 5 October, Pastor Shelton Vishwanathan was attacked by six nationalists as he was distributing Gospel tracts in Tiryani village. The nationalists confronted Pastor Shelton and told him to stop handing out the tracts. After Pastor Shelton agreed to their demands, the nationalists attacked.

The men seized the keys to Pastor Shelton’s scooter, took away his phone, and physically assaulted him. The last thing Pastor Shelton recalled happening was the nationalists were threatening to offer him as a sacrifice to their god as they beat him.

“They punched my back and told me that they would offer me as a sacrifice to their deity as a punishment,” Pastor Shelton said. “They struck severe blows on my head, so that I soon fainted.”

When pastor Shelton regained consciousness, he was locked by himself in a dark room. He was without any food or water.

After several days, an elderly woman who lived nearby heard Pastor Shelton’s cries and released him from the room. The elderly woman told Pastor Shelton the door was bolted from the outside and she was scared the nationalists would come after her if they found out she released him.

“Had she not helped, I would not be alive today,” Pastor Shelton said. “I fully believe that it was God who sent her to help me.”

  • Thank the Lord for the rescue of Pastor Shelton. Ask God to heal him of any physical harm resulting from the attack and the captivity.
  • Pray too that the Lord will help Pastor Shelton overcome the trauma of the event.
  • Pray the Lord will continue to grow His church in India and ask for strength and protection on behalf of those who are sharing the Gospel on the frontlines.

ETHIOPIA: Christian Loses Hand in Beating

ETHIOPIA: Christian Loses Hand in Beating

When the young Ethiopian man came to faith his community turned against him, but he remains committed to following Christ. Kofi grew up as a Muslim, but when an evangelist introduced him to Christ, he was instantly drawn to the saving grace of God and became a Christian.

As Kofi grew in his faith, he began sharing it with others, which angered local mosque leaders. They brought him before the local Islamic court, where Kofi told them he could never give up his new faith. The leaders decided to set a trap for him, sending a mob out to the farmland of Kofi’s brother, claiming a property line dispute.

When Kofi appeared, the crowd shouted, “This is the enemy of Allah!” and began to beat him. His left hand was so badly injured that doctors had to amputate it. Pray for Kofi, who told Christians who visited him, “I am happy not only to give my hand for Jesus, but I am ready to give my life for faith in Jesus Christ.” Pray for continued recovery, provision and witness in the area.

  • Pray for healing for Kofi, protect him from those who want to silence him, may he continually share his faith, place a hedge of protection around him and bless him Amen.
  • Pray that the men who damaged and destroyed Kofi’s hand would be brought to justice and Kofi will forgive them.
  • Pray the Lord will use this testimony mightily to bring many to Christ.

TANZANIA: New Believer Rejected

TANZANIA: New Believer Rejected

Juma met with his pastor secretly after coming to Christ, afraid that his Muslim family would find out about his conversion. When his wife eventually found some of his Christian books, she immediately called his brothers, all radical Muslims. His brothers burned the books, beat Juma and threatened him.

When word spread that he was a Christian, Juma was completely rejected by his relatives, neighbours and friends. He also lost his job. “No one will hire him, as no one is willing to give an apostate work,” a VOM worker said.

  • Pray for Juma, that the Lord would minister to him during this season of loss. Pray he will be given the spiritual strength to endure.
  • Ask our Lord to supply Juma with all his needs. Pray for employment opportunities.
  • Ask the Lord to have mercy on Juma’s wife and family members. Ask Him to soften their hearts and impress upon them the need to be reconciled to God through Christ.
