Displaced Believers Find Hope

Displaced Believers Find Hope

In India, Christians are persecuted by Hindu extremist groups (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [RSS], Bajrang dal and others). Local governments and nationalist Hindus seek to ‘purify’ India by making it entirely Hindu.

RSS informants live in nearly every village and report on the activities of Christians, resulting in attacks and arrests. Christians are very often violently thrown out of their villages or forced to flee.

In the Kandhamal region of India there are many thousands of displaced Christians who have settled in remote, less-inhabited areas, yet still face the threat of attack by Hindu fanatic groups. Many are forced to flee, time and again, often leaving their belongings behind.

Late last year, Voice of the Martyrs, with the help of our supporters, was able to carry out a Bibles Plus distribution in Kandhamal. The packs were transported by small trucks, over difficult terrain, to seven very remote areas.

A total of 800 Christian families each received a Bibles Plus pack containing: 25kg of rice, a mattress and a blanket for each family member; two cakes of soap, 1kg pulse seed, 1kg wheat flour, and a Bible in the Oriya or Odiya language.

All the recipients are victims of Christian persecution, most had been severely affected through recent persecution and all were first-time Bibles Plus recipients.

“I was thinking there is no one who cares for me after going through such gruelling persecution and being chased out of place to place. I was thinking there is no church who cares for a believer like me. But after receiving this Bible, which I love … I know I am not alone in this world and my Lord has kept people around me who love and care for me.” – 87-year-old widow

“I am a 90-year-old lady. When I faced this fresh persecution, being chased out of our settlement area in October 2019, I was so disgusted thinking that no one loves me. After receiving a Bibles Plus pack my faith has been rebuilt and I am strong in my Lord now.” – Bibles Plus recipient

Believers living in Mindanao, Philippines, especially those living in rural mountainous areas, face severe persecution and have limited access to Christian resources.

Bibles Plus packs were distributed in remote areas of the Caraga region, giving hope to persecuted believers and building their faith in God.

The distribution was coordinated by church leaders in the area. A four-wheel drive was provided so the distribution team could include those living in areas where travel is difficult, and towns are hard to reach.

The Bibles Plus packs included a mat, bed sheet, noodles, sugar, coffee, rice, a copy of Tortured for Christ and a Bible. The items were warmly received and the recipients – which included pastors – were grateful and very much encouraged in their faith and ministry.

In the remote areas of Kandhamal, India, believers are currently experiencing harsh persecution, including displacement.

Bibles Plus packs were distributed from seven different churches in remote areas of this region. Over 800 packs were handed out with many recipients receiving their very first Bible.

The packs included a 25kg bag of rice, pulse seeds and flour for each family. In addition, each individual received their own Bible, a mattress, a blanket and a cake of soap.

Coming from remote areas with little means of communication, many of the families travelled as far as 60kms one way and some walked several kilometres to arrive at the distribution points.

It only costs $30 to ensure a persecuted believer receives a Bible in their local language, ‘plus’ other basic essentials, specifically tailored to their country.

Project: Bibles Plus India

Our Bibles Plus campaign runs from March to May each year. Last year Bibles Plus packs were distributed to our faith family in India.

Below are the responses from just a handful of recipients:

I am illiterate. I am not good with words, but I can say “Thank you”. You were really kind to me. You provided me with a blanket without charging a single rupee. I thank God for Bibles Plus. May God bless and prosper you enough so that next year, in the same season, you may be a blessing to many old women like me. – Aditi, Bibles Plus 2018 recipient, India

Thank you to all who partnered with us in blessing Aditi in 2018.

I am from a village called Kothogarh. Every day I go into the forest to collect leaves. I make bowls and plates to sell at the local market. What I earn is not enough to meet the needs of my family. I am encouraged and very grateful to have the winter needs of my family met through Bibles Plus. Thank you also for providing a precious Bible for me to read. – Vivaan, Bibles Plus 2018 recipient, India

Thank you to all who have partnered with us to ensure Vivaan and her children had their winter needs met in 2018.

I live in a village called Nuagaon. I am a widow, advanced in age and unable to work. I survive on an old age pension provided by the government of Odisha. I often look after my grandchildren. I have been praying for a blanket and a mat. With Bibles Plus, in a wonderful way, God has provided these, along with a Bible. Thank you. – Akhila, Bibles Plus 2018 recipient, India

Thank you to all who partnered with us. God used us to provide for Akhila in 2018.

Every day I burn wood in the forest and gather the coal to sell at market. I have been saving for a blanket and mat to protect myself and my child from the cold. Meanwhile, I have been praying to God to help me bear the cold. God heard my prayer and today He sent relief through Bibles Plus. Thank you for providing me with a warm blanket, a mat and my very own Bible. – Reyansh, Bibles Plus 2018 recipient, India

Thank you to all who partnered with us. God heard Reyansh’s prayer and answered through Bibles Plus.

I appreciate the kindness shown to me. I am an elderly widow, unable to work. I spend my old age pension, received from the government, on needed medication each month. I now understand the love and great concern that God has for me. He has comforted me with a new Bible and provided me with relief through Bibles Plus. Thank you for your compassion. – Sai, Bibles Plus 2018 recipient, India

Thank you to all who partnered with us to help Sai understand how much God cares for her.

Our distribution teams are committed to continue placing Bibles in the hands of our brothers and sisters who live in restricted nations.

“We distributed 250 packs to different churches in the area; some came from great distances. It was a joy and a blessing to see these people receiving the Bibles and other provisions. The people were so very happy and felt the blessing of God. We praise the Lord for Bibles Plus which touches many needy, persecuted Christians even in the remote areas of Mindanao.”
– Distribution partner, Mindanao, Philippines

“I am so much blessed and encouraged seeing the people receiving the Word of God joyfully, seeing their hunger for the Word. Praise the Lord for the ministry of VOM that we will be able to reach even to the very remote areas of the Philippines.”
– VOM worker, Philippines

“I encourage the people to come purely for the Word of Life they will receive through the loving gift of a Bible for each one, and the life packs are an extra blessing.”
– Distribution partner, Philippines

“The four-day distribution was victorious and successful despite the risk. Bibles Plus is a great blessing to persecuted Christians. Thank you for your prayers; the Lord was with the distribution team.”
– Distribution partner, Philippines

“Whether it will qualify as the best distribution or not, as it was done quietly because of the dangerous environment, I know that a certain untouched part of the persecuted body of Christ was blessed with Bibles Plus. Thank you.”
– VOM worker, India

“Watching them receive the Bible, I saw many of the believers hold it close to their face and kiss their holy book with a deep endearment of respect for what was inside. This is their commitment to receive the Word of God in their own language. It was a very precious moment for all of us, seeing these dear brethren holding the Bible close to their heart with a smile on their face.”

Many thousands of Bibles have been distributed since the Bibles Plus program began. This year we are committed to distributing Bibles, in various languages, throughout the communist countries of China, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba. For more information on Bibles Plus go to vom.com.au/biblesplus

From our CEO – March 2019

From our CEO – March 2019

It is alarming to note the resurgence of communism in our world today. We find Christians are being targeted in China, particularly if they hold a place of authority or if they have a high profile. This is also prevalent in other countries like Vietnam, North Korea, Laos and Cuba.

The dominant political and economic ideology of communism is a force being used in an attempt to eradicate the worship of Christ. The Chinese communists have even started a push to remove the first commandment from the official Three-Self Church – “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Providing Bibles, the living Word as we know it – rather than the communist version of the Bible, which contains Mao writings as an introduction – is of utmost importance, as it provides believers with the fundamental principles of the faith and encourages them to be an effective witness for Christ. In addition to the Bibles, we will supply provisions like essential daily food items and blankets, as needed.

As Pastor Richard Wurmbrand once proclaimed to the body of Christ, “The message I bring from the underground church is: ‘Don’t abandon us! Don’t forget us! Don’t write us off! Give us the tools we need! We will pay the price for using them!’”
With the upsurge of communism, we find the most requested ‘tool’ in communist countries is the Bible. We agree that this is THE most important resource for equipping the saints who suffer for their faith.

Your participation in this campaign will assist us in equipping the communist world with God’s Word in many different languages.

Please consider supporting this most important distribution of God’s Word and essential items for our fellow believers who suffer for their faith. For more information go to vom.com.au/biblesplus

God bless.
