NIGERIA: Boko Haram Releases Video of Chibok Girls

The Bring Back Our Girls movement is back in the spotlight after a group claiming to be Boko Haram released a new video saying some of the abducted girls were killed in Nigerian airstrikes.

In the disturbing video, the group says it is still holding around 50 of the 276 Chibok girls abducted over two years ago and is willing to exchange them for imprisoned Boko Haram terrorists.

The video also shows one of the kidnapped Chibok girls describing the hardships the remaining girls held deep in the Sambisia Forest face daily at the hands of the terrorists.

She pleads with parents from the community to pressure the Nigerian government to release the jailed militants in exchange for the girls’ release.

 Prayer Points

  • Pray that each kidnapped girl will know that not even Boko Haram can separate them from God’s unfailing love, despite the horrors they endure daily (Romans 8:35-39).
  • Ask God to provide a way for each of the Chibok girls and others who have been abducted to be returned home soon.
  • Pray that those who have escaped or been rescued will not be stigmatised for their association with Boko Haram but will be loved and cared for as they return to their families.

One Christian Chibok girl escaped from Boko Haram about two weeks ago, eventually finding herself in the hands of the joint task force assigned to defeat the terrorist group.

While in military custody, she explained to them that most of the girls were forced into marriage and conversion to Islam, while others were either shot or beheaded.

According to her, there are about 59 girls left in the main camp.

While imprisoned by Boko Haram, she was raped repeatedly, impregnated, and contracted venereal diseases. According to her, Boko Haram is in disarray, aimlessly moving around the region, leaving IEDs and other explosives behind in order to slow down the military’s efforts.

The Chibok girls have been missing since their abduction in April of 2014.

NIGERIA: Army Frees Women and Child Hostages

Nigeria’s army has rescued at least a dozen kidnapped women and children held captive by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.

In a statement, military spokesman Col Sani Kukasheka Usman said the group was rescued as the army cleared Boko Haram camps on Monday 14 September in north-eastern Borno state.

The army did not say where the women and children had been kidnapped from or their condition.

Hundreds of hostages have been freed from Boko Haram captivity this year but none of the 219 girls abducted in April 2014 from a school in Chibok were among those rescued.

Nigeria’s home-grown Islamic extremist group has used dozens of girls and women in recent suicide bombings in Nigeria and neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger, raising fears it is using kidnap victims.

More than 1,000 people have been killed since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in March with a pledge to annihilate the militants, whose 6-year-old uprising has killed a total of about 20,000 people. At least 2.1 million people have been driven from their homes, some across borders.

Earlier this year, troops from Chad and Nigeria drove the extremists out of some 25 towns held for months in an area that Boko Haram had declared an Islamic caliphate, aligned with the Islamic State group in the Middle East. The insurgents have returned to hit-and-run attacks and suicide bombings.

The President of the Ekklisiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, Church of the Brethren in Nigeria) has revealed that over 176 of the girls kidnapped from a school in north east Nigeria by Boko Haram terrorists last year are from families belonging to his denomination.

Reverend Samuel Dali’s revelation coincides with a Global Week of Action launched by local activists to commemorate 500 days since the abductions.

Speaking to local media, Reverend Dali added that over 8,000 members of his church had lost their lives and 70% of church facilities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States had been destroyed during the Boko Haram crisis, including the church’s headquarters in Mubi, Adamawa State, which was seized in October 2014. In addition, an estimated 90,000 EYN church members are reported to have been displaced by terrorist violence.

During a two-day visit to Nigeria which began on 23 August, United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appealed “as UN Secretary General and personally as a father and grandfather” for the unconditional release of “the Chibok girls and the many children and adults kidnapped in the North East.”

Prayer Points

  • Pray that the persecution of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria would bring them together in unity and that they would encounter God in intimate ways through this trial.
  • Pray the world would continue to stand in prayer and contend for the release of those who remain in captivity and the large numbers of people who have lost loved ones, homes and livelihoods.
  • Pray that Nigeria’s military offensive will be successful in continuing to weaken Boko Haram, especially in regions such as Yobe and Borno state, as they are still extremely insecure.
