On 13 August 2017 long-persecuted Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng (54) escaped house arrest in Shaanxi province with the help of two associates; Gao desperately needed medical and especially dental care.
Though the men evaded police for 23 days, ultimately Gao was captured and taken into secret detention.
One year has now passed, and still nobody knows his whereabouts. Grave fears are held for his safety and wellbeing.
Before his disappearance, Gao was repeatedly arrested and jailed. It was also reported by human rights groups that he suffered torture by the Chinese security officials.
On 29 August Gao received the Shahbaz Bhatti Freedom Award for his “dedication to China’s religious freedom and human rights.” The award was presented to his wife, Geng He, in California.
The Shahbaz Bhatti Freedom Award is named after Pakistan’s first Christian Cabinet Minister, murdered in 2011 for his criticism of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and his defence of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman still on death row for a conviction of blasphemy of Islam.

- Pray God would protect and sustain Gao Zhisheng and his family who have not seen him in some time.
- Pray the news of this award along with Gao’s testimony may be used to make known the sufferings of many in China and further proclaim the Gospel.
- Pray the increasing opposition in China will in no way stifle the efforts of the church as they worship the Lord and make Him known.
