ETHIOPIA: Two Injured in Arson Church Attacks

ETHIOPIA: Two Injured in Arson Church Attacks

The town of Alaba Kulito in southern Ethiopia was the scene of a horrific attack against Christians on 9 February. According to a VOM Canada source, at least 13 churches were burned — some completely destroyed — along with other church-owned property.

While there were no fatalities, two church workers were admitted to hospital. Both have since been released after receiving medical treatment. The trouble flared after a false rumour was spread that one or more mosques in the area had been burned.

The area is predominantly Muslim, with constant tension between Christians and Muslims in this community. Earlier this month, the Meserete Kristos Church was vandalised and local Christians have faced intimidation and threats.

The violence does not appear to be related to evangelistic work in the area, which has been very fruitful. VOM Canada, together with Steadfast Global, participated in various projects within the region, along with local partners. As a result of the devastation, emergency funds have been sent to provide needed assistance for the churches directly affected.

  • Please prayerfully uphold the two ministry workers who were injured. Pray also for all the members of the attacked churches who presently have no place to meet for worship.
  • Ask the Lord to oversee the fruitful ministry that has been accomplished within the region, so that it will continue to flourish despite opposition.
  • May those responsible for the attacks come to understand the Gospel message and turn in faith to Christ.

ETHIOPIA: Christian Attacked with Machetes

ETHIOPIA: Christian Attacked with Machetes

An Ethiopian Christian suffered deep wounds to the back of his head when he was attacked while alone in his home by a group of local Muslims with machetes.

The attack on 16 July left the 27-year-old man needing life-saving surgery.

The man ─ who, for security reasons, cannot be named ─ was attacked in Hirna, a rural town 400 km east of the capital, Addis Ababa. His local clinic referred him to the hospital in nearby Asebeteferi who in turn sent him to Adama, where a doctor, believing he would die en route to a bigger hospital, operated on his wounds. Although he is still unwell, the surgery stabilised him enough to be taken elsewhere for more specialised treatment.

A source told World Watch Monitor that the gang of Muslims who attacked the man were angry because he was evangelising. The gang had first attacked the local Full Gospel Church and partly damaged its roof and a wall before going to the man’s house.

  • Ask the Lord to help this Christian man overcome this terrible ordeal. Pray there will be no lasting physical injury and pray too, he will be granted the courage to continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for those he has shared the Gospel with; may they not be fearful but be spurred on in love and faithfulness to serve the Lord.
  • Pray the authorities will bring the perpetrators to justice. Ask the Lord, in His mercy, to reveal Himself to them.
