INDIA: Pregnant Christian Woman Loses Child After Beating

Around 40 Christians in the village of Balanagar gathered in the house of a local Christian on 12 October to hold a prayer meeting. At approximately 7:30pm a mob of 60 Hindu radicals, led by the former village council president, Mr Sati Srinivasulu, stormed into the house shouting anti-Christian slogans. Without explanation, the mob of radicals began beating the Christians.

One Christian was severely injured when he was hit in the head with a brick by one of the radicals.

Not even the Christian women and children were spared from the beating. Swapna, a 25-year-old Christian woman who was four months pregnant at the time, begged the radicals to spare her because of her pregnancy. Unfortunately, the radicals beat Swapna as severely as the other Christians. Following the attack, Swapna was rushed to the hospital where doctors told her she had lost her baby.

The Christians filed a First Information Report against their assailants at the local police station. Authorities arrested seven individuals connected to the assault, but all of those taken into custody were released on bail later that day.

INDIA: Christians Brutally Assaulted by Radicals

Christian villagers in India’s Chhattisgarh state have reportedly been brutally assaulted by Hindu radicals following the passing of a resolution in the village banning all non-Hindu religious activities.

The incident took place in Karmeri village on Tuesday 8 September. According to local sources, a mob of over 50 Hindu radicals gathered and surrounded a church premises around 4pm. Before any of the Christians could ask what was happening, the radicals attacked, assaulting Christians with wooden clubs and sticks.

When some women confronted the radicals, they were brutally beaten with wooden clubs and fists. Two Christian women, Pulo Bhai, 40, and Ludri, 35, were seriously injured in the assault and collapsed, unconscious.

Tension between Karmeri’s Christian and Hindu communities mounted when Christians began to build a church in the village. When news of the church construction spread, Suresh Yadav, the district president of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (a Hindu nationalist organisation), convened a village meeting. As a result of that meeting, a resolution was passed banning all non-Hindu religious propaganda, prayers and speeches in the village. This resolution is similar to ones passed in 50 other villages in the state intended to effectively make Christianity illegal.

Following the passing of this resolution, life for Christians in Karmeri became very difficult as they were the subjects of a social boycott. “We, Christians, were not allowed take the cattle out for grazing, our rations were cut off, and we were barred from buying things at the local grocery shop,” a Christian woman from Karmeri said. “The attackers are roaming free, even after the attack on the Christians. They are demanding us to leave the foreign religion and come back to the Hindu religion.”
