UGANDA: Pastor and Two Christian Boys Slain

UGANDA: Pastor and Two Christian Boys Slain

Pastor Wilson Niwamanya and his 12-year-old son were on their way home to Kabale on 21 November when they were stopped by Islamic militants.

They were returning after delivering Christian literature along the Democratic Republic of Congo border when four men stepped out of the bush and forced them to stop the motorcycles they were riding. Grabbing Pastor Wilson, one of the assailants declared, “This man must die for disrespecting our religion.”

The perpetrators began to beat the pastor on the head with blunt objects and then stabbed his son, Simon Peter, fleeing the crime scene when other motorcyclists approached. Simon Peter died at the scene, whereas Pastor Wilson succumbed to his injuries a few days later. Another Christian worker who was with them escaped with injuries to his hand. According to his wife, Pastor Wilson had received text messages prior to the incident, warning him to stop distributing literature that allegedly discredits Islam.

In a separate incident, relatives killed the six-year-old son of a former Islamic sheikh after he refused to renounce his faith in Christ. The Muslim relatives met at the home of Emmanuel Hamuzah on 23 November and, for two hours, tried to convince him to return to Islam. Later that evening, Emmanuel was outside his home with his son when five relatives reappeared. When Emmanuel once more refused to recant, they began to beat him; while others stepped on his son’s neck, causing suffocation to the child. The attackers fled when neighbours came to help, but the injured boy died before he could obtain medical attention.

While Muslims in Uganda are a minority, there are large concentrations in some areas. Some groups have become increasingly aggressive, particularly towards those who have left Islam.

  • Ask the God of love and mercy to embrace Pastor Wilson’s wife and surviving children, as they endure this time of grief and loss. Ask the Lord to bring physical and emotional healing to the worker who witnessed the event and suffered injury.
  • Prayerfully intercede for Emmanuel, his wife and their three other children, as they mourn the horrific death of their child.
  • Pray that those who instigated these attacks will come to understand that same eternal hope which can only be found in the light and love of Christ.

NIGERIA: Boko Haram Kills 12 Christians, Kidnaps Others

Militants believed to part of the original Boko Haram sect under the leadership of Abubakar Shekau attacked Takulashi village near Chibok. The attack took place on 1 November, when six-gun trucks filled with insurgents entered the village and started shooting. They killed 12 Christians during the attack and were able to escape, kidnapping multiple women and children. They also burned down many homes and businesses.

According to Rev Zakariya Musa of the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria (Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria, EYN), 9 of the 12 people killed were members of his church. One of the other three was a pastor of the local COCIN church. The final two were vigilantes trying to protect their community members.

This attack is one of the many that Boko Haram has conducted against Christians and their communities across Northern Nigeria. Over the past decade, Boko Haram is believed to have killed more than 50,000 people and displaced millions of others. Many of those killed and displaced have been Christians. The EYN church has lost many of its members. According to reports released by the church leadership, as many as 20,000 members have been killed since 2009.

UGANDA: Woman Poisoned by Family

UGANDA: Woman Poisoned by Family

A VOM-supported Christian woman died earlier this month from complications due to poisoning.

After several days, she was struggling to walk and in great pain. Her family knew she was ill, and her father sent a message to her saying she would not survive. After a month in the hospital, she succumbed to the illness and died. Doctors found damage to her internal organs from poison, which her family likely administered to her while she still lived at home.

Anna is survived by two children, ages 6 and 12, who are being cared for by the pastor. “It is a very sad moment for us losing Anna,” the pastor said. “It is very sad for the children as well. Please pray for her children.”

  • Ask the Lord to comfort these two children. Pray He will walk closely beside them as they come to terms with this tragic loss. Thank God for the pastor’s willingness to care for them.
  • Pray these children will come to know and understand the love their mother had for the Lord and desire to know Him for themselves.
  • Pray the death of Anna will not be in vain, but the Lord will use it as a seed for the Gospel for the sake of many, including her family.

NIGERIA: Middle Belt Christians Endure Perpetual Violence

NIGERIA: Middle Belt Christians Endure Perpetual Violence

Radical Fulani militants have killed multiple Christians in Nigeria’s Plateau and Kaduna states. Among the victims was a six-year-old Christian boy.

On 23 September, over 100 Fulani militants attacked Christian villagers in their fields in Jol village, severely injuring nine men with machetes. A few hours later, a mother and her son suffered fatal injuries by militant machetes in neighbouring Sopp village.

On 28 September, in the Miango district, Fulani militants attacked three children; the youngest was six-year-old Emmanuel David. Four days before, the militants also killed five men, including a church leader from the Church of Christ in National (COCIN).

COCIN reported a surge in planned attacks, coordinated by predominantly radical Fulani herdsmen. Christian leaders in Nigeria have said they believe herdsmen attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt are inspired by their desire to forcefully take over Christians’ lands and impose Islam as desertification has made it difficult for them to sustain their herds.

  • Ask the Lord to intervene and bring an end to the violence, protect the believers and bring many Fulani to a saving knowledge of Him.
  • Ask the Lord to walk with the believers during this time of ongoing unrest, tragedy and mourning.
  • Pray the deaths of so many will not be in vain but the Lord would bring spiritual blessing to this nation.
