LAOS: Village Elder Ostracised by Family for Faith

LAOS: Village Elder Ostracised by Family for Faith

Khampang came to Christ after witnessing God’s goodness and being healed. Only two others in his village were Christians, and both had experienced harsh reactions from their families.

One young man was disowned by his family, and a teenager was kicked out of his family home. As a result, both young men were forced to leave the village.

Community leaders were reluctant to punish Khampang, who is an elder, but they still worked against him, convincing Khampang’s wife that his decision was illegal. She refused to sleep in the same bed as him and gave him small portions of food or nothing at all.

When Khampang recently met with VOM partners, large tears rolled down his cheeks as he shared how his family had rejected him.

  • Pray that Khampang will be reconciled with his family while staying faithful to Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord to use his faithful witness to soften the hearts of many towards him and the Lord he follows.
  • Pray for Khampang and the two young men who were forced to leave the village, that they will mature in their faith, led by the Holy Spirit, by God’s word and through the encouragement of other believers.
  • Thank the Lord for the growth of the church in Laos and pray for frontline workers who are sharing the Gospel.

LAOS: Teenager Kicked Out

LAOS: Teenager Kicked Out

Only days after he accepted Christ, 15-year-old Seng was already facing the persecution Jesus often spoke about.

After his parents learned of his decision, they sat down to talk with him, telling him he needed to renounce his “foreign” faith. If he didn’t, they would kill him or kick him out of the house. When Seng told them he wouldn’t, they packed up his belongings and told him to leave. “Go stay with those Christian friends of yours. You are not welcome here,” his parents said. “Stop this religion at once.”

Seng is staying with friends with assistance from VOM.

  • Ask the Lord to guide and protect Seng in his new faith. Pray Seng will be greatly encouraged by God’s Word and the faith of fellow believers.
  • Thank the Lord for an opportunity for Seng to be cared for during this difficult time. Ask God to help Seng come to terms with the loss he is suffering.
  • Pray the faithfulness of this young, new believer will become known and that many more will come to know the goodness of God and that salvation is only through Him. Pray especially for Seng’s parents.

LAOS: Christians Detained for Planning Christian Funeral

LAOS: Christians Detained for Planning Christian Funeral

Four Lao Christians have been in jail for more than three months in the country’s Khammouane province for planning a Christian funeral that is contrary to the local customs.

On 3 July, the four Christians travelled to Khammouane’s Phousath village to attend a funeral that was deemed by village authorities to have violated Lao customs and “divided community solidarity.” As a result, they were arrested before they could conduct the Christian ceremonies, said a Phousath village official.

The local villagers wanted to perform ceremonies for the deceased Christian “according to our culture handed down to us by our ancestors,” the official continued, “When someone dies, we help by making donations, sharing food, and asking [Buddhist] monks to come and pray at the home.”

“But [the Christians] wanted to do things that violate our traditional customs. They were preparing things that we felt were strange and wrong and do not understand, and so we acted in order to prevent them from happening,” he said.

While no trial has been held to prosecute these four Christians who are from different villages, the police investigation has been completed and no decision was made as to what happens to them next. Their wives and children are facing hardships due to the loss of income and uncertainty about the four men’s fate.

On 12 October, an official in the religious affairs department of the Lao central government reportedly stated that his department will now work with the Lao Front for National Construction and the Evangelical Church of Laos to win justice for the four imprisoned villagers.

  • Pray for justice for these believers and for their swift release.
  • Pray this difficult time endured by these Christians and their families, may be used by God as a witness to the God-given faithfulness and strength of believers.
  • Pray for Christians in Laos who face opposition. That they will be encouraged and strengthened and will stand firm when tested.

LAOS: Villagers Threaten to Kill Christians`

LAOS: Villagers Threaten to Kill Christians`

A community in Laos blatantly told the four Christian families living among them that the only way to get rid of Christians is to kill them.

In an effort to persuade the Christians to leave, villagers have illegally logged all the trees on the property of one of the Christians. When the village faced drought and famine in 2019, village leaders purposely did not include the names of the Christian families on the list of those who would receive government assistance. When one of the Christians complained, village leaders told him the Christians were being stubborn by not leaving the village even though most of the village doesn’t believe their “foreign religion”. They added, “Right now, the only way to get all of you to leave is to threaten to kill you. Letting you Christians in this village is a waste of land here.”

The Christians do not want to leave their homes.

  • Pray the presence and faithful witness of these believers may be used by God to bring many in the village to Christ.
  • Pray the threats against these Christians will come to nothing. Ask God to protect them.
  • Ask God to help these Christians remain focused on Him and stay bold in spite of the opposition.

LAOS: Transformation for Young Man

LAOS: Transformation for Young Man

Khamla was devastated when his wife left him. One day, as he walked past the Buddhist temple in extreme sorrow, something that looked like a small bird hit him in the chest. He unexpectedly changed; he became violently strong and was suddenly unable to communicate.

His parents and the community were so fearful that they locked him in a cage. His parents made many animal sacrifices to the spirits and invited multiple witch doctors to help him, but nothing worked.

Finally, they turned to the Christians, who sent believers to pray every day. After a month of prayers, Khamla calmly told his father he was ready to leave the cage. Khamla, his parents and siblings all gave their lives to Christ after witnessing his transformation, and many others in the village began to show an interest in Christianity. This worried village authorities, and they declared that Khamla and his family could remain Christians, but no one else in the village could. They also said that Khamla and his family could not lead others to Christ. “Pray they will know what to do and that the Lord breaks down these barriers, as many saw the healing miracle of the Lord,” a VOM partner wrote.

  • Praise God for this remarkable testimony.
  • Pray Khamla and his family will have much contact with other believers and be given an opportunity to grow in knowledge and understanding of the Gospel. Pray too they will be given the strength to stand against opposition.
  • Pray that other members of the community, including the authorities will also come to marvel at the wonder and power of Christ.
