MEXICO: Pray for Mardomio and Family

MEXICO: Pray for Mardomio and Family

A Christian family in Chiapas, Mexico, was forced to flee their home after being threatened by members of their Zapatista community.

Mardomio and his family were ordered by Mardomio’s father, the village ‘religious teacher,’ to stop attending church and to return to their traditional beliefs, but they continued to attend church secretly.

When they invited their pastor to their home for a special celebration, Mardomio’s father and some other villagers disrupted the celebration and beat the pastor before running him out of town.

Mardomio’s children were then banned from the local school, and his family was ordered to leave the village. They have had to move several times but continue to meet with other believers for worship.

  • Pray the Holy Spirit will grant this family and their pastor great wisdom to know how to respond. Ask the Lord for healing, protection and provision.
  • Pray the witness of these believers may be used by the Lord to reveal the love of Christ to those who currently oppose Him.

MEXICO: Pastor Pedro Vazquez Released

On 29 March Pastor Pedro Vazquez was abducted from his village in Chiapas, Mexico, by a violent group known as Chinchulines. Pastor Vazquez was held in a nearby village and his family members and church congregation were very concerned that he would be killed.

Pastor Vazquez works in an area where pastors and Christian workers have been threatened with death and evangelicals are often expelled from their communities, losing land, homes and crops.

Pastor Pedro Vazquez has since been released.

MEXICO: Protestants Expelled, Homes Destroyed

Thirty evangelical Protestants in Chiapas, Mexico were expelled by local community leaders and saw their homes and property destroyed on 4 January.

This incident continues a trend of hostilities against Protestants in rural Mexico and this village specifically.

Despite state and federal officials being notified of these illegal acts, the Mexican government continues to ignore pleas from Protestant villagers to enforce laws protecting their freedom of worship.

This situation is indicative of a rising trend of persecution against religious minorities in rural Mexico.

MEXICO: Couple Threatened for Sharing the Gospel

A Christian couple in southern Mexico was harassed and threatened on their way to a wedding celebration.

‘Cesar’ and ‘Laura’ were on their way to a wedding when they were stopped by a large group of people, who began insulting them because they were Christians. Locals had already threatened to stop the Christian wedding and had blocked roads in the village.

Cesar and Laura asked police officers for help when they arrived, but the officers told them to handle the situation themselves and left. Two women then grabbed Laura by her arms, threatening that she would be the first person burned for sharing the Gospel in their area. Cesar rescued his wife, and they fled in their car.

MEXICO: Christian Families Left to Starve after Raid

On 15 October, local government officials and community leaders raided farmland in the remote village of Mariano Matamoros as part of an ongoing effort to expel a small Protestant Christian community from the region.

According to sources, 158 Christians in the village, located in the state of Chiapas, were left almost entirely without food after the raid resulted in the theft of 6 hectares (approximately 15 acres) of crops from land owned by the Protestant Christian community.

Since 2012, Protestant Christians in Mariano Matamoros have been the target of repeated attacks by local leaders intent on forcing the Protestant community to “reconvert” to Catholicism or leave the village, according to local sources. Members of the Protestant community say that these incidents include the confiscation of property, physical attacks, and denial of access to public utilities. As recently as 14 June, village leaders cut off water and sewage services to members of the Christian community.

Rights groups in Mexico say that authorities at the State level in Chiapas have repeatedly refused to take action in the Mariana Matamoros case, despite being presented with evidence of illegal conduct. Requests by the local Protestant community for compensation for stolen goods and destruction of property have also been ignored.
