MYANMAR: Five Families Kicked Out of Village in Rakhine State

MYANMAR: Five Families Kicked Out of Village in Rakhine State

After being shackled for three days and fined for buying a banana from a Christian vendor, Maung Cia sought out a pastor in a neighbouring village. The pastor shared the Gospel with Maung and two of his friends, and they accepted Christ.

Maung then led 10 other villagers to Jesus and invited the pastor to lead a worship service in his village. Midway through the service, Buddhist villagers severely beat the pastor and stoned the worshippers. Village leaders later forced five families out of the village.

VOM is providing the families with food and housing assistance. “Now as much as I can I’m sharing the Good News and I will continue to do so,” Maung said. “Please remember us in your prayers. Thank you for your support and your love. God bless you.”

  • Praise God for taking the barbaric and unjust punishment inflicted on Maung, to bring about a spiritual awakening.
  • Pray for those who oppose the Lord and His Good News in the area, that He will use the witness of these new believers to encourage others to repentance and salvation.
  • Pray the families affected may be strengthened in their faith and be mightily encouraged as they see the hand of God at work.

MYANMAR: Frontline Worker Accused of Denigrating Buddhism

MYANMAR: Frontline Worker Accused of Denigrating Buddhism

A Christian accused of speaking against Buddhism has been told that a verdict will soon be delivered. Aung Tun Oo was accused by two radical Mahbahtah monks of denigrating Buddhism in 2017. Since the case was registered, Aung Tun Oo has been summoned to the court 54 times.

A VOM worker in Myanmar asked for prayers that God would cause the judge in the case to rule justly rather than give in to pressure from the radicals. The Mahbahtah monks are members of the Wirathu sect, which is the most dangerous terrorist group in Myanmar.

As Aung Tun Oo has been going through this gruelling legal process, he has also suffered physical ailments.

  • Ask the Lord to strengthen Aung Tun Oo physically and spiritually as he continues to endure this trial.
  • Pray for the Lord’s favour on Aung. May the verdict be just and this case fully resolved. Pray too he will receive much support and encouragement from other believers.
  • Pray for those who oppose the Gospel in Myanmar, that they would have a transforming encounter with the one true God.

MYANMAR: Lingering Effects of Imprisonment

MYANMAR: Lingering Effects of Imprisonment

A key denominational leader targeted by Communist separatists continues to suffer lasting effects from his imprisonment. In 2018, the Wa State Army arrested Christians and at least 120 pastors in north eastern Myanmar, including Aikhun Plot.

In prison, he spent most of his time with a metal leg chain digging into his ankle, causing long-term bone damage and pain, and he also contracted a skin disease. Upon his release and after treatment, his skin ailment cleared up, but he continues to experience excruciating pain in his leg as doctors have not been able to provide effective treatment.

The pastor was recently elected principal of a Bible college and is eager to take on his new responsibilities. “Pray for God’s wisdom and guidance for him and his family so he would be able to preside and lead the college effectively for the glory of God and his kingdom expansion,” wrote a VOM worker in Myanmar.

  • Pray for this precious brother Aikhun, for healing, strength, and comfort.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit to him to give him wisdom, guidance, direction, hope, encouragement, peace and strength to continue his work at the Bible college and surrounds.
  • Pray that God’s kingdom will advance in Myanmar and many are saved through the dedication and prayers of these faithful men.

MYANMAR: Imprisoned Pastor Cannot Leave Wa State

MYANMAR: Imprisoned Pastor Cannot Leave Wa State

Rev Ai was arrested in 2018 along with other Christian leaders during a separatist crackdown in Wa State. His family struggled while he was in prison, and members of the Wa State Army prevented other believers from helping them.

Ai was released after several months, but the situation remains very difficult for Christians in the region. They are not allowed to meet for fellowship or even pray before meals, and pastors are strictly prohibited from leading church activities.

Ai and his family would like to leave the area, but as members of the Wa ethnic group they are not allowed to move outside Wa State borders.

  • Pray for Ai and his family. Ask God to grant them strength and wisdom to navigate the considerable difficulties they are facing.
  • Pray that in spite of the oppression from the authorities, believers will find ways to encourage and care for one another.
  • Ask the Lord to be at work throughout the nation, bringing light from darkness to grow the church in strength and number.

MYANMAR: Pastor Imprisoned for Sharing the Gospel

MYANMAR: Pastor Imprisoned for Sharing the Gospel

A pastor in Wa state served two months of hard labour in a prison camp recently after religious authorities noticed an increasing number of people converting to Christianity.

Pastor Sam often accompanied his wife to market days in the area, where she sold fresh fruit and vegetables. They both took the opportunity to share the Gospel with people they met. In time however, authorities noticed a rise in the number of people turning to Christ and decided to arrest the pastor.

He fled before they were able to arrest him and authorities instead arrested his wife and also burned their entire stock of Bibles. When Pastor Sam heard that his wife was in custody, he returned to take her place in prison, serving two months.

According to VOM contacts, the situation in the region of Wa state is very difficult for Christians right now. “Pray that God would give them strength to stand firm in faith,” a Christian leader said.

  • Ask God to strengthen believers in the region. Pray they will be a great encouragement to one another in the faith.
  • Ask the Lord to minister to Pastor Sam and his wife. Pray they will be granted a willingness and opportunity to continue in ministry.
  • Pray that God would soften the hearts of Wa authorities and bring them to a saving knowledge of Him.
