NEPAL: Pastor Receives Death Threats After Testimony Video Goes Viral

A pastor in Nepal has received numerous death threats after a video of him sharing his Christian testimony and his experience as a former Hindu went viral. The wide abuse against the pastor and his family is a tell-tale sign of rising religious intolerance against Christians in Nepal.

In March 2019, Pastor Sukdev Giri, of Trinity Fellowship Church in Nepal’s Chitwan District, shared about his journey of becoming a Christian at the International Christian Media Workers Summit in Kathmandu. As a part of his testimony, Pastor Giri described how the acts of Hindu gods such as Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva led him to question his Hindu faith. This questioning, and Pastor Giri’s discovery of the testimony of Jesus Christ, eventually led him to accept Christianity as his faith.

On 11 August a video of this testimony was posted on YouTube. Since then, the video has received more than 750,000 views and Pastor Giri has been accused of abusing Hinduism. This has led to death threats and Pastor Giri having to live in hiding.

“Highly abusive and derogatory words were used against me,” Pastor Giri said. “Calls also started, and I immediately discarded by old SIM card and kept the phone away for some days. I have dedicated my entire time to travel, as my family feels it is unsafe for me to stay in my hometown in Chitwan.”

The reaction to Pastor Giri’s testimony is a sign of the times in Nepal. Like India, religious intolerance in Nepal is primarily driven by the ideology of radical Hindu nationalism. In recent years, the acceptance of this ideology has led Nepal to pass laws criminalising religious conversion and public discussions about religion. Under these laws, Nepal has arrested and charged 17 Christians, including two Americans.

  • Ask the Lord to provide Pastor Giri and his family His leading and protection. Pray they will be granted wisdom as they consider their future life and ministry.
  • Pray the Lord will use the video testimony for His glory and for the spiritual encouragement of Pastor Giri and others who have counted the cost and started to follow Christ.
  • Pray for spiritual awakening in Nepal.

NEPAL: Christian-Run School Burglarised

NEPAL: Christian-Run School Burglarised

Buddhist fundamentalists broke into a school run by Christians recently, searching for proof that the Christians were indoctrinating local Buddhist children.

The Buddhists broke into the school during the night, rifling through offices and destroying furniture, but they didn’t find the evidence they were seeking. The Christian who manages the school was born into a traditional Buddhist family that came to Christ after his mother was healed from an illness. Because there was no school in the village, he decided to start one.

Several Buddhist students have come to faith in Jesus Christ since starting to attend the school, prompting accusations from Buddhist fundamentalists that the Christians are proselytising.

  • Thank the Lord for the way He is working in and through the manager and students.
  • Pray for the protection and security of the school and its staff.
  • Pray the perpetrators may too have an opportunity to hear the Gospel and come to salvation in Christ.

NEPAL: Assaulted Pastor Recovering from Trauma

NEPAL: Assaulted Pastor Recovering from Trauma

More than a month after Pastor Dhurba Kumar Pariyar was attacked by Maoist rebels, he remains in pain and faces mental trauma. Despite that, he has found strength in the Scriptures, as well as the testimonies of others who have suffered for their faith.

Pastor Dhurba was riding a motorcycle on his way back from distributing toys and supplies to poor children when he was stopped by two other motorcyclists. After confirming his identity, the pastor was pulled off and dragged towards the jungle. The attackers accused him of preaching a foreign religion and bribing people to convert. While beating him, they threatened his life if he did not hand over any American money that was with him at the scene. The men fled when a vehicle passed by and the headlights fell on them.

The injured pastor was released after receiving treatment in hospital. Although a police report was filed, at last indication, the perpetrators had not been found. Pastor Dhurba and his wife, who are the parents of a five-year-old son, have served the Devotees Nepali Assembly in Kathmandu since 2011.

In October 2017, a bill was passed restricting religious conversion and instituting fines for anyone found to be involved in converting others. The law came into effect in August 2018 and, since that time, there has been an apparent increase in the overall persecution of Christians.

  • Pray for Pastor Dhurba’s complete healing from both the physical and emotional wounds, asking God to continue providing great comfort through His Word and the encouragement of fellow believers.
  • Pray for others in Nepal who are courageously ministering in the name of Christ to those needing spiritual and humanitarian help.
  • Pray that the perpetrators responsible for this attack be held accountable, so they will be convicted of their wrongdoing — in hopes of them coming to repentance and faith in God through the testimony of faithful Christians.

NEPAL: Five Christians Arrested

NEPAL: Five Christians Arrested

Five Christians, including two foreign nationals, were arrested on 23 April on allegations of attempted proselytisation. The arrests happened during an early morning raid on a hotel in Ghorahi. The police seized Bibles, computers and other items, including cash. Before being arrested for preaching Christianity and converting through allurement, the five were scheduled to attend a Christian conference that day.

Among those arrested was the General Secretary of the Nepal Christian Society, Dilli Ram Paudel. Others included in the arrests were an Indian citizen, Gaurav Shrivastava; an American citizen, Leanna Cinquanta; and two Nepalese citizens, Kunsang Tamang and Pramid Kafle. After being detained for ten hours, Leanna’s visa was revoked and she was deported to the United States. The others are facing criminal charges.

Opposition to Christians and other religious minorities has increased markedly since new laws were passed in August 2018, criminalising any encouragement of religious conversion.

  • Pray for the remaining Christians who are facing unjust allegations, asking God to mediate on their behalf.
  • Pray that His truth and righteousness will be upheld so that His people in Nepal will be able to freely practise their faith.
  • May the existing anti-conversion laws be repealed so that the religious rights of all will be respected.

NEPAL: Christians Blamed for Villagers’ Deaths

NEPAL: Christians Blamed for Villagers’ Deaths

When five people died within a week in a small Nepalese village in January, the only Christian family in the Hindu village was blamed for the deaths.

Gianprakash and his family were asked to leave the village because they were following a foreign God.

One night, six young men came to Gianprakash’s home, shouting and trying to break down the door. When Gianprakash asked them why they were disturbing his family, one of the young men said, “We know the death spirit is here, and that’s why five people are dead!” Before leaving, they broke the home’s water cistern.

Gianprakash and his family have temporarily moved to another city.

  • Ask our Lord, the great encourager and provider to minister to this family.
  • Pray the Lord will surround the family with love and support of fellow believers.
  • Pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the village. May many of the villagers come to know the living Christ and put their hope in Him.
