Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has seen a 20% increase in membership. Its emboldened base seeks to forcibly unite India under Hinduism despite the country’s great diversity of languages, cultures and religions. Christians in India face persecution from well-organised Hindu extremist groups, local governments and nationalist Hindus who seek to ‘purify’ India by making it entirely Hindu.
Our front-line workers are asking for prayer for a recent incident:
On Wednesday 19 February, during a gathering of pastors in Kusumba Village, Jalgaon District, Maharashtra, a mob of approximately 400 Hindutva extremists attacked, disrupted the meeting and brutally assaulted many pastors.
The attackers destroyed furniture, left two people in critical condition and destroyed six motorcycles. The police arrived at the scene and managed to bring the situation under control. However, the attackers were released, while about 28 pastors were detained for questioning and later released at 5pm.
This incident has deeply affected the community. Our front-line workers request prayer for the situation.
