BANGLADESH: Church Threatened by Large Mobs for Ongoing Ministry

Until the 21st century, Bangladesh was considered one of the poorest countries in the world. Though there are signs of economic growth, governmental instability continues. Churches are careful when offering relief to the poor and needy because they do not want to encourage false conversions among people claiming faith in Christ solely for economic benefit.

While Bangladesh is a majority-Muslim nation, the government avoids undue influence from Islamists and actively fights extremism. Millions of Bangladeshis are learning about Christ and the Bible through media outreaches. Many Christian groups meet publicly, while others worship in unregistered churches.

After a secret Christmas programme at Saiful’s house church in late December 2024, someone obtained photos and exposed the church on social media, prompting outrage against Saiful and the church from several nearby mosques. Within hours, the situation escalated until a large Muslim crowd marched to the church, threatening violence.

Police intervened to stop the procession, but the leaders of the rally vowed to return with more people to burn Saiful’s house.

Local authorities have granted permission for the Christians to continue meeting, but Saiful has been warned to take safety precautions.

Mosque leaders have instructed the Muslim community to shun the exposed Christian families; still, the Christians meet almost every day to pray and study the Word of God. They continue to share the love of Christ with those who are persecuting them.

    Pray for them

Thank the Lord for Saiful and his house church congregants. Praise the Lord that they have not given up meeting together, despite ongoing threats and persecution.

Pray for the church in Bangladesh, that God would strengthen, equip and grow them as they continue sharing the love of Christ with their Muslim neighbours.

Ask God to ready the hearts of the Bangladeshi people, so that as they hear the gospel of Christ, many would come to know Him as their Saviour.
