Burkina Faso has seen a sharp rise in Islamist activity since 2016. Militants linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) and al-Qaida have crossed porous borders in the north to broaden their influence in the Sahel region. As many as 10,000 Christians have fled their homes as a result of violence and threats against Christians throughout the country.
On Saturday, 8 March, eight young Christians were baptised. The ceremony took place in a village in the southwestern part of the country where Muslim terrorists from neighbouring Mali sometimes attack and kill followers of Christ. “These baptisms are different from most I have attended as they are quite solemn,” said a front-line worker. “Once these individuals are baptised, they are targeted and are likely to be beaten or even killed for their faith in Jesus Christ.” As they were being baptised, the Christians sang “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus”. Seven of the newly baptised Christians also received Bibles.
