In a recent social media post, a man named Aadesh Soni is attempting to call 5,000 people to gather on 1 March, to join ‘Gau Nyay Yatra’ (cow justice parade). Participants are being asked to enter three villages in Chhattisgarh, India: Bishrampur, Janakpur and Ganeshpur. The majority of residents in these villages are Christian.
In his post, Soni is urging the people to invade homes, to violate daughters and daughters-in-law, and publicly commit obscene acts. He justifies this by accusing Christians of slaughtering cows, which are considered sacred in Hinduism, and claims to have the support of the administration.
In another video, Hindu priest Shankrachrya Avimuteshwaranand, who reportedly inspired Aadesh Soni, has called on 1,000 people to kill those accused of cow slaughter.
Such incidents are not uncommon in Chhattisgarh. In December eight village councils passed resolutions banning Christians from staying in their villages. These resolutions forced Christians to either renounce their faith or leave the villages. Reports indicate that around 100 Christians were affected, and were threatened with the confiscation of their property and farmland if they did not comply. According to reports, a mob of 1,500 people reportedly began looting Christians’ crops and demanding they abandon their faith while the police took no action.
