In the Muslim communities of southern Philippines, the tradition of arranged marriages remains a deeply ingrained practice. For some young women, however, this practice represents a significant personal and moral struggle. Forced into unions they do not choose, they often take the courageous step of standing against these traditions, seeking refuge and a chance to live according to what they believe is right and true.
Pastor Javier and his wife, Christian missionaries serving in southern Philippines, have dedicated their lives to sharing the gospel to Muslims. Through their ministry, they have witnessed many Muslims come to know Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Among these converts are young women who face not only familial opposition but also the threat of persecution for their decision to defy forced marriages and, in most cases, to embrace a new faith.
A short time ago, a 15-year-old girl, who had recently converted to Christianity, sought shelter in Pastor Javier’s home, fleeing a forced marriage arranged by her tribe. The tribe leader arrived and demanded her return so she could marry a neighbour he had chosen for her. For the young girl, returning would mean surrendering her freedom and the values she had come to hold dear. For Pastor Javier, the situation posed a serious challenge: how to protect her while facing potential backlash from the community. Adding to the complexity, the girl’s family was under pressure to comply with the tribe leader’s demands, as the tribe leader expected a portion of the dowry in exchange for arranging the marriage.
The pastor’s home has become a place of refuge for some young women who stand against these oppressive practices. These women are not merely rejecting tradition; they are taking a bold stand for justice and truth, often at great personal risk. Pastor Javier and his wife’s roles are crucial, as they offer not only shelter but also encouragement to persevere in the face of persecution.
