On 10 March, Muslim residents in Wakatobi held a demonstration in front of the Wangi-Wangi sub-district office to reject the construction of a church building in the South Wandoka area of Wakatobi, South-east Sulawesi Province.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, totalling more than 220 million Muslims, which is about 13% of the world’s Muslim population. 82% of Indonesians are Sunni Muslims. 13% are Christians. The main persecutors in Indonesia are Islamic extremists, who influence moderate Muslims. While the government does not normally persecute Christians, neither does it consistently defend them.

Sudiadi Siregar submitted the application for the construction of the church building on 3 February, requesting recommendations on the suitability of land and on building utilisation activities for residential homes or prayer houses in the South Wandoka area.

The deliberation regarding the planned construction of the church nearly ended in chaos as many residents rejected the plan to build the house of worship.

“For the application to build this church, I do not agree,” said Udin, a Wakatobi activist. “The first reason is that it does not meet the Ministry of Religion regulations requirements. The second reason is that the Wakatobi Police have facilitated the place of worship.”

The deliberation resulted in a decision to reject the church’s construction.

Last Christmas, Christians in Wakatobi Regency held their 2024 Christmas service in the Wakatobi Police Hall because they did not have a church building. The Wakatobi Police have provided facilities for other Christians in Wakatobi to worship in as well.

    Pray for them

Ask the Lord to encourage the believers in Wakatobi after this disappointing result, that they would not give up meeting together but build one another up in Christ as they continue in fellowship.

Thank the Lord for the positive relationship the Christians have with local police in Wakatobi. Praise the Lord for their assistance in facilitating worship for our brothers and sisters.

Pray that the people of Wakatobi would see the continued strength and grace of the Christians and seek to know their God as their own.
