On 15 August 2021, the Taliban – the radical Islamist military group, took control of Afghanistan.
The impact on the small Afghan Christian community was immediate and severe. “It was just like in Acts, chapter 8: ‘On that day a great persecution broke out against the church and all but the apostles scattered’,” said a front-line worker. “Many first-generation Afghan Christians fled, but many are still serving through media back into Afghanistan.”
Some Christians remained in the country “like sheep among wolves”, said the front-line worker, who knows of at least one Christian Afghan suffering in a Taliban jail.
Taliban rule has led to a sense of desperation in the country: “Afghans are in a place of turmoil, and many are turning away from Islam,” said the front-line worker, who added that downloads of Christian material from several Afghan language sites have increased significantly.
