On 15 August 2021, the Taliban – the radical Islamist military group, took control of Afghanistan.

The impact on the small Afghan Christian community was immediate and severe. “It was just like in Acts, chapter 8: ‘On that day a great persecution broke out against the church and all but the apostles scattered’,” said a front-line worker. “Many first-generation Afghan Christians fled, but many are still serving through media back into Afghanistan.”

Some Christians remained in the country “like sheep among wolves”, said the front-line worker, who knows of at least one Christian Afghan suffering in a Taliban jail.

Taliban rule has led to a sense of desperation in the country: “Afghans are in a place of turmoil, and many are turning away from Islam,” said the front-line worker, who added that downloads of Christian material from several Afghan language sites have increased significantly.

    Pray for them

Pray the Lord will cover and protect the small Christian community that remains in Afghanistan. Pray He will grant them wisdom and discernment in their daily lives.

Pray too they will not despair, grow weary or lose heart but with expectation, and much prayer, wait on the Lord for Him to build His church, even amid this most difficult and trying time.

Thank the Lord that He brings light into darkness. Pray there may be many avenues for the Afghani people to seek and find the one true God.
