A Christian evangelist, Arif, was arrested earlier this month. He will be investigated for his role in ‘enticing’ Muslims to convert to another religion and harming the Muslim community. Arif, a married man with three adult children, is a former follower of Islam.

He suffered persecution in the past when he first became a believer. His conversion greatly angered his family, and they forced him out of the house. He, his wife and their very young child, were homeless until a church deacon took them in.

In later years, Arif became a bold evangelist. Recently a video clip was posted online of Arif speaking to other Christians about praying for certain people groups in Indonesia and sharing the gospel with them. The short clip has been widely circulated online and came to the attention of the local authorities.

Arif was arrested on 6 April by local police. He faces ten years in prison. A few days following Arif’s arrest, a Christian YouTuber, who commented on the case was also arrested. It is feared that more arrests will follow.
