In Nepal, 84 percent of nationals are Hindus. Hinduism is more prominent in the south, along the Indian border, whereas Buddhism is more prominent in the north. There is a small, visible Christian community in Nepal, but believers experience opposition from extremists among the Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Marxist groups. Christians face harassment and beatings from local Hindu nationalists who envision Nepal becoming a ‘pure’ Hindu nation.
Pastor Amar Thapa reported that he received 25 Maithili language SD cards two months ago through one of VOM’s projects. Six Hindu monks in one of the villages in the district where he was working, watched a video from the SD cards and learned about Jesus Christ. They said, “Here is the peace that we have been searching for.” These Hindu monks want to learn more about this peace. Pastor Amar and other believers are meeting with the monks to share more about Christ.
